Nova Scotia is one of the founding five provinces of Canadian Confederation. The name Nova Scotia originates from Latin, meaning “New Scotland” and the province is famous for its high tides, lobster, seafood, blueberries, apples and scenic highways.

 

Nova Scotia is almost entirely surrounded by water with over 13,000km of coastline.

 

Nova Scotia has a diverse history of Mi’kmaq, Celtic, Acadian and African cultures that date back hundreds of years, with Mi’kmaq culture being rooted back thousands of years.

Nova Scotia is home to many familar faces and names you may not have realized are Bluenosers.

-   Sarah McLachlan – Juno and Grammy award winner

-   Elliot Page – nominated for Best Actress in Juno and starred in Inception

-   The cast of the Trailer Park Boys, the show is filmed in Nova Scotia, predominately in Halifax Regional Municipality

-   NHL superstars Sidney Crosby, Nathan Mackinnon, Al MacInnis and Brad Marchand grew up in Nova Scotia.

-   Music stars Anne Murray, April Wine, Classified and Sloan all hail from Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia on the Big Screen and TV

The Curse of Oak Island on the History Channel goes into depth of the Nova Scotia island’s mystery of buried treasure and unexplained objects. The show has produced 9 seasons and has millions of viewers.

Scenes from James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) were filmed in Halifax, where Halifax was the closest major city to the site of the disaster. 150 victims of the Titanic were buried in Halifax cemeteries.

Other Interesting Fun Facts

The Nova Scotia House of Assembly is the oldest in Canada, having first sat in 1758, and was the site of the first responsible government in the British Empire.


Pier 21 is the last surviving seaport immigration facility in Canada and welcomed nearly one million immigrants during its operations.


Maclean’s Magazine has Halifax ranked as the best place to live in Canada, with Halifax being the fastest growing city by percentage in the country.
